Jo Myers, Associate Director, Public Affairs
Mary Jo Myers joined the H&A team with a rich background
in service to military-related, educational and humanitarian
programs. A military spouse for more than 40 years, she is
the wife of General Richard B. Myers, a recent Chairman of
the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Mrs. Myers has won multiple awards
for her humanitarian work, and in recognition of her volunteer
service, she was appointed to the President’s Council
on Service and Civic Participation in February, 2006.
She is continuing her involvement with the military by serving
on the Board of Trustees for the Fisher House Foundation, an
organization that provides homes near military hospitals and
veterans’ medical centers where military family members
can stay free of charge while loved ones are being treated.
She was instrumental in establishing the “Hero Miles” program
operated by the Fisher House Foundation that uses donated frequent
flyer miles to purchase tickets for families of hospitalized
military members to visit their loved ones. She also serves
on the Board of Advisors of the TriWest Healthcare Alliance,
the National Military Family Association and Discovery’s
Military Channel.
A graduate of Kansas State University, Myers remains active
in support of her alma mater by serving as a Foundation Trustee
and on the Advancement Council for Leadership Studies and Programs.
During international travel with her husband, she became committed
to the plight of people in developing countries. She was a
founding member and serves on the board of the Aschiana foundation,
which supports schools for street children in Afghanistan.
Myers became involved with MediSend, an organization that offers
education, as well as medical equipment and supplies to needy
hospitals and clinics around the world. She serves on their
board and received their first Humanitarian Award in 2004.
Other awards include The Spirit of the USO Award and National
Defense University’s American Spirit Award in 2005.
Throughout her husband’s military career, she was active
in officers’ spouses’ clubs, serving in various
board positions and as an advisor. During an assignment in
Japan she proposed and spearheaded the publication of a book
entitled, Obi Ties East and West, with all proceeds going to
charity.
Mrs. Myers holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from
Kansas State University and has served as an educator in secondary
schools and adult education programs. She also worked with
schools and police forces across the country to promote a children’s
safety program with a national organization.
The Myers have three children and four grandchildren.
